How to prepare coffee in a French Press
The French Press, or plunger coffee maker, is one of the simplest ways to make coffee at home. It produces a cup with body, sweetness, and great flavor, without the need for complicated techniques.
Basic recipe
Coffee: 30 g
Water: 500 ml
Temperature: 92–96 ºC
Grind: coarse
Time: 4 minutes
Step-by-step
1. Grind the coffee
Use a coarse grind, similar to sea salt.
2. Add the coffee
Place 30 g of coffee into the French Press.
3. Add the water
Slowly pour in 500 ml of hot water, making sure to wet all the coffee grounds.
4. Let it steep
Place the lid on top without pressing down the plunger yet, and wait for 4 minutes.
5. Press the plunger
Press down slowly and evenly until it reaches the bottom.
6. Serve immediately
Do not leave the prepared coffee in the French Press, as it will continue to extract and may become more bitter.
Want to adjust it to your taste?
More intense → use a little more coffee.
Milder → use a little less coffee.
Bitter or dry → try a coarser grind.
Weak or watery → try a slightly finer grind or add a little more coffee.
Which coffee do we recommend?
The French Press works very well with coffees you want to enjoy with body and sweetness.
Natural Ethiopian coffees can offer more fruity, sweet, and intense profiles, while washed coffees usually result in a more clean, floral, and delicate cup.
Our recommendation
Start with this recipe and then adjust it to your taste. There is no single correct way to make coffee: the best recipe is the one you enjoy the most.
