The legend of coffee in your cup

The story is well-known: it was an Ethiopian shepherd who discovered the first coffee bean in the Kaffa region of Ethiopia, after seeing his goats jumping around like crazy. When he took it to some local monks, they threw it into the fire, thinking it was a devil's fruit. It was then that its aroma captivated them, and they prepared a brew that allowed them to pray and stay awake.

Once coffee was discovered , the jebena, the world's first coffee maker, was invented (curiously, we blush to see that few baristas know about it today).

In Ethiopia, drinking coffee is a ritual, a ceremonial act of gathering, communion, and sharing, where the coffee is roasted, ground, boiled, and enjoyed on-site. We've been doing this for as long as we can remember, several times a day.

The largest variety of Arabica coffee is grown in the Ethiopian mountains, and that's why at Black Jebena we're going to dedicate ourselves 100% to Ethiopian coffee so you can delve into its diversity. We'll do so without snobbery or complicated jargon, but with the simplicity and joy that characterizes us Ethiopian people.

Get ready to discover a new world, with a wide range of aromas, textures, and flavors in each batch we roast.

If you think it's legitimate to pay €3-4 for 1/4 kg of coffee, this might not be the place for you. It's time to pay producers and the entire value chain fairly , drink healthy coffee, and enjoy its immense complexity.

It's time for Ethiopian coffee.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What does “specialty coffee” mean?

Although the term isn't popular (we prefer cured coffee), it's high-quality coffee that meets international scoring standards (more than 80 SCA points). It's grown on small farms, traceable, and free of defects. Ours, in particular, typically has more than 90 SCA points, meaning it's Grade 1.

What does it mean that your coffee is 100% natural?

All our coffees are 100% natural, with no roasting or added sugar. Within natural coffees, there are different processing methods: natural (the bean is dried with the fruit pulp, achieving sweet and fruity notes), honey (some of the mucilage is retained for a more mellow body), and washed (cleaner and brighter in the cup). Each method offers a distinct and complementary experience. We invite you to learn more about them here.

What varieties of Ethiopian coffee do you have?

Ethiopia is the country of origin for coffee. Our beans come from selected cooperatives in regions like Sidamo, Yirgacheffe, and Guji, known for their floral, fruity, and medium-bodied coffees. We also offer them in natural, washed, and honey varieties. See them here.

Don't you work with coffees from other countries?

No. There are many roasters around the world, and we've decided to specialize in the one we know best: Ethiopian. Being from there, we know the suppliers, we know the coffee, and we know which roast best suits it. Our goal is to be the benchmark for Ethiopian coffee in Spain and Europe.

Is whole bean or ground coffee better?

Whole bean coffee preserves its aroma and flavor better because it's ground just before brewing. At Black Jebena, we recommend whole bean coffee if you have a grinder, as this way you can enjoy the full freshness of the roast. If you don't have a grinder, you can purchase one , or order it pre-ground for your coffee maker, and we'll grind it for you at no additional cost.

How long does it take between roasting and shipping and how do I store it?

We roast every week. Orders are prepared with freshly roasted coffee and shipped within 24-48 hours to ensure maximum freshness. It is recommended to start drinking it two weeks after roasting and consume it within the first six weeks. Store in an airtight container, away from light and moisture.

Do you ship to all of Spain?

Yes. We ship coffee to the entire peninsula within 24-48 hours, and to the Balearic Islands within 48-72 hours. Orders over €50 have free shipping. We also ship internationally. Espresso machines and grinders may take 5-10 days.

Do you have coffee subscriptions?

Yes. We offer a flexible subscription to receive your favorite coffee every month with a 10% discount. You can pause or cancel it whenever you want. Click here.

Do you offer coffee for cafes?

Yes. Coffee shops that wish to do so can join our wholesale offering . They'll enjoy both excellent coffee to serve and packaged coffee to sell, earning a commission on the sale.
